The Man for the Job

Like one who lights one candle with another, [the leaders of Israel] were filled with the Holy Spirit. They were filled with the Holy Spirit taken from the spirit of Moses, but the Spirit of Moses was not diminished. The one candle ignites but the flame on the other candle is not diminished. (Numbers Rabbah 21:15; 13:20)

Sacrifices for the Appointed Times

Command the sons of Israel and say to them, “You shall be careful to present My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time.” (Numbers 28:2)

The Man over the Congregation

The mystics interpret Moses’ request as a prayer for the coming of the Messiah: “Moses our teacher asked for the kingdom of David and the Messiah—that he would come to be the redeemer and redeem Israel from the exile.”

Moses' Uncertainty

When the daughters of Zelophehad asked Moses for a ruling, he did not decide the case himself. He brought the question to the LORD. Why did Moses need to consult God? Why was he unable to judge the case himself? Was Moses uncertain of the correct answer?

Religion is a Two-edged Sword

On the one hand, faith in God, trust in Messiah and obedience to God's commandments is the narrow path that leads to life. It brings peace, joy and purpose to existence. On the other hand, religious convictions can become a source of strife, enmity and hatred between people and nations.
